Tony Pua is also feeling the heat of the RM 50 credit card tax in Malaysia

Written on January 4, 2010 – 12:11 am | by Kampung Boy |

As we know, the government is imposing a RM 50 credit card tax and RM 25 tax on supplementary cards on Malaysians. A move that had many Malaysians puzzled on the government sudden implementations.

The reasons given by the government is very vague. The government stated that the tax is implemented so that the rakyat will not depend too much on credit cards. The so called caring government wants it rakyat to do away with less credit card. Very “caring” indeed by charging RM 50 tax on the rakyat.

Even DAP parliamentarian Tony Pua is feeling the pinch with such sudden implementation. Tony has terminated a major bulk of his cards from 8 or 9 credit cards to a mere 2 only! If people like Tony are feeling the pinch, i am pretty sure, we the normal rakyat are feeling the PUNCH with such implementation. For those of you interested in what Tony has done with his credit cards, you can read it at :- Credit Card Snip! (I) or Credit Card Snip! (II) :- Just click on the links!

Personally i have 3 credit cards. That makes me liable of paying the government a whooping RM 150 credit card tax. Below are the cards that i have in my wallet :-

To be honest, i haven’t decided which card i will cut and give back. Haven’t made up my mind on it yet. Most likely i will be cutting one of the three above or i might not even cut any. Still in a dilemma as all my cards has different use and purposes.

Conclusion

The government earlier stated that they are all for the rakyat but their sudden move of implementing such tax is really a burden to all Malaysians especially the middle income earners.

Poor people don’ have credit card so they are not affected. The rich and famous does not really care on the tax is RM 50 per card is just peanuts to them. The middle class will surely be compressed even more. One thing the government still does not see that large part of Malaysia is made up of poor and middle class citizens.

I have decided keep my Citibank Shell Visa Gold as it is still the best cash rebate card I can find.

I also have Direct Access Platinum Visa and Mastercard. I own them for more than 8 years. Free for life. With consideration on service tax, I might opt to cut the VISA as its Mastercard always provide special offers on those merchants I regularly visit like MPH. Also, it gives 2% rebate on any petrol station. Just treat it as backup card to Citibank Shell Visa Gold.
