6 tips on how to save money on eating

Written on December 13, 2009 – 7:56 pm | by Kampung Boy |

As you can see i spend roughly RM 400 a month on eating while my fellow friend Seng Choy from Financial Planning DIY spends roughly around RM 700 just on eating. We can clearly see that eating takes a big chunk out from out income.

Let me share a few basic saving tips where you can try and use to save some money on eating :-

Downsize your portion

If you are always eating big serving, downsize it to a smaller one. Instead of picking an extra meat on your economy rice (nasi campur), try to pick vegetables instead. Vegetables are more economical compared to meat. Not only that, it’s better for your body and health.

Cut down on supper

Eating supper is purely waste of money as our body does not need anymore over time work when we are about to sleep. Just imagine if you are working overtime for a couple of days in a week, you will surely fall sick if you don’t get enough of rest. Same thing for our body.

When the time for us to sleep, our stomach, liver or in short our organs need rest. Imagine you are eating a heavy supper like Maggi Goreng (Fry Maggi Mee) tambah ayam (chicken) before you sleep, and you are waking up all your resting organs to work for you over time when they are suppose to sleep, isn’t that detrimental for health?

By cutting down on supper, you can reduce weight. Trust me, it does really work. I have a good friend that used to like to eat supper all the time. Guess what, just because he wants to look better and win a girls heart, he needs to look more slim. He decided to slim down by not eating supper at all.

He is loosing weight and does not take on any medication or doing any diet to get slimmer. By not eating supper you are killing two birds with one stone. Save money and can loose weight.

Pack your own food

Prices of goods have escalate and it’s never cheap eating at hawker stalls anymore. A plate of fried kuey teow might cost you RM 4 per serving and you might need to spend around RM 5 to RM 8 per meal on food and drinks.

It is good if you can spend some time to pack some food made from home to eat during lunch hour or breakfast. Making sandwiches is not tough as you only need bread, eggs or some vegetables.

This is another kill two birds with one stone scenario where you can save money and also good for weight conscious people.

Leftovers, do not throw

Sometimes we will over cook our lunch and dinner and there are still a lot of leftovers. Do not throw those leftovers away. It is very sinful to waste food as there are some part of the world where people don’t have any food to eat.

Those leftovers food can be put into the fridge. After that, heat the food up and there you go, another meal on the table. So do not just throw or simply waste food.

Scare yourself

Maybe one of my least favorite method of of saving money on eating but i am sure it works as well. Think of the dirtiest thing or grossest thing you have ever seen.

For instance, my buddy wife is afraid or cockroaches and if she wants to save money on eating, she just need to scare herself that the roaches are in her food. Like i say, my least favorite method but it does work!

Cut down on processed food

The less processed food you put into your grocery cart, the more money you going to save as processed food is more expensive.

Minimal consumption of processed food is also better for your health.

Conclusion

We spend a lot on eating and we just don’t really realize it. Take 5 minutes and just sit down and calculate on how much you spend on eating and you will be surprised that it takes quite a large sum off your salary if you are just beginning your life working.

Be frugal in spending especially when eating. I am not saying do not eat at all but do it on a moderation. Happy saving!

    Good suggestion. Kampung Boy.

Actually, I have been doing all these for years and people look at me like a “weird thing”. Sometime, people around are wondering whether I am a vagetarian or not?

Anyway, I believe in certain areas, we have to work against the crowd in order to get more of what we want.
